Holiday Waste

I found these statistics from Tina at My Baby's Green who posted them on her Facebook page.

According to the Medical University of South Carolina, waste output increases by at least 25% during the holiday season.

I totally believe that! We have already taken an extra trip to the Recycle Center with all the boxes and filling paper from all the online ordering I've done. And I had an armload of styrofoam and plastic wrap that I had to throw away last night. And it's not even Christmas yet!

Here are a few tips to lessen your load:

Put less packaging on your gifts. Many suggest re-using wrapping paper, but we know this is not always so easy to do, better yet use gift bags instead as these are easy to save and use for many years.

OR...Make your own wrapping paper. Use children's artwork, stylish magazine ads, or comics from the newspaper. (If every family wrapped just 3 gifts this way, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields. -Sierra Club)

When throwing a party, don't use plastic utensils, paper plates or napkins.

Use do-it-yourself holiday decor, like berries and pine combs.

Recycle and craft with used wine and drink bottles.

Buy recycled or tree-free cards, made from materials like hemp.

Courtesy of Charlotte, NC

We are going plain this year with no bows and ribbons. But next year I want to come up with some eco-friendly decorations to make the present wrapping fun!

Edited to Add: Here are some FUN Green Gift Wrapping Tips HERE - Thanks Monica! These are great!

Amber from Life Love Green Blog MAKES her own cloth bags as wrapping! See HERE! They are awesome!

Tell me what you are doing to help with Holiday Waste!

Visit My Baby's Green too! ~ Tina has a great eco-friendly store AND blog. She gives away great items too! Right now there is a giveaway up for THREE Winners to win FIVE Diapers!

Tassimo BrewBot Coffee Expresso Latte Giveaway

Would you believe me if I told you we've never owned a coffee maker? I do like my coffee though, the flavored kind. Or give me a cappuccino or latte any day. So I am excited to tell you that my very first coffee maker is rreeeaalllyy cooooool. The Tassimo BrewBot!

We've all the seen the commercials.

We first saw this commercial a few weeks ago. I didn't even know machines like this existed. I turned to Hubby and say 'Wow that is really neat. We need one." And do you know what he says back? 'Babe, you know it doesn't really turn into a robot right?' :)

Tassimo just sent me my BrewBot yesterday and is anxious to get it out for the holidays so we only got to use it last night so were aren't experts yet but I'm thrilled to tell  you that the first cup of coffee we made was a Starbucks Cappuccino! And it was YUMMY!!

I went out to Target today (and they carry them at Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond, Lowes, etc) and got myself Starbucks Latte, flavored syrup to add to my drink, and hot chocolate for the kids! So excited to make more!

I will admit to you one flaw - it is not eco-friendly so I want to tell you Recycle, Recycle, Recycle what you can. Ok, now I feel better.

Here is some info for you about the technology and specs of the BrewBot:

It has T DISC Technology - through patented technology developed and designed by Kraft Foods, the TASSIMO brewer reads the bar code printed on each T DISC to ensure optimal brewing conditions, including the exact water amount and temperature. Because the brewing takes place inside the T DISC, consumers can prepare different drinks, one after another, with no flavor transfer from cup to cup. This ensures first-cup freshness and consistent taste every time.

Drink Varieties - TASSIMO is the only Home Brewing system that gives everyone the drink they want, from coffees and teas to rich cappuccinos and lattes. Even hot chocolate. Tassimo offers more than 40 beverage and flavor varieties to satisfy everyone with 13 distinctive beverage brands including Milka, Gevalia, Maxwell House, Suchard, Mastro Lorenzo, Twining’s®, Kenco, Jacob’s, TAZO®, Nabob, Carte Noire and Seattle’s Best Coffee®. TASSIMO even satisfies your coffee-house coffee cravings with a great variety of Starbucks brands – including Cappuccino Primo and Latte Primo.

● Makes coffee, tea, cappuccino, latte, crema, espresso and hot cocoa
● Makes drinks in about 1 minute

● Includes an exclusive flow–through water heater for faster, quieter brewing

● Space saving design ideal for apartments, dorm rooms and countertops

● Smart bar code technology allows the brewer to adjust each beverage with the proper temperature pressure and amount of water

● Weight: 7.08 lbs. Length: 11.0 "; Width: 7.9 "; Depth: 11.8 "

● 1.5 Liter water tank

● Retail Value: $129.99

Holiday Shopping at Pier 1

This post brought to you by Pier 1 Imports. All opinions are 100% mine.

Is Pier 1 one of your favorite stores to shop at? It is mine! I can spend a long time in this store, slowly browsing the aisles, taking mental note of what I need (or is it want?).

The holidays are especially fun. I love looking at the Christmas dishes. Here is one of the great sets they have this year.

Are you having a big New Year's Eve Party? Be sparkly!

If I was headed to the party, this is what I would bring. A seahorse bottle tag!

On clearance for only $2.48! Gosh, maybe I need to stock up.

They have lots of items for this Beach Mama! I can decorate my tree!

Do you want to get me some beachy holiday gifts? I love these...

And these...on clearance for only $3.98! Are you taking note?

Pier 1 is a big supporter of Toys for Tots. This month you can bring in an unwrapped toy or make a donation directly at the register. How awesome is that?

Now click on over to their Facebook book page HERE and Like the page ~ they will donate $1 for every new fan they get into the Toys for Tots fund.

Head over there now and spread the holiday cheer!

My Laundry Helper

Laundry is a big chore in my house as I'm sure it is in yours. Five people, plus cloth diapers, leads to almost daily laundry loads. I would like to say that I have a system but I really don't.

I do try to get my older boy's clothes done over the weekend. They have certain uniform type clothes they have to wear for school and if I didn't wash them once a week they wouldn't get through the next.

As for the rest? When the laundry basket gets full in that room I know it's time for another load. Or when the diapers have run out, or even worse, start to smell.

I think it would help if I had some more space! My laundry "closet" is in my kitchen and there is no room to hang anything so it all overflows out the door. My poor family is usually jumping over laundry baskets or dodging piles.

I have trained my boys to fold the towels which is a big help! This is the help that P'Diddy gives me.

He takes the clothes out of the basket for me. Even when I'm not ready of course. You will see his favorite toy...the remote control right there with him!
(And don't forget you can win his cute organic romper from My Baby's Green HERE)

What is your laundry situation like? Do you have good helpers too?

My Holiday Cards from Cardstore.com

I love planning my Christmas cards. From making my address list, to creating the card, to buying the holiday stamps. Some years I make my own from scratch with my scrapbook and stamp materials. Other years I buy them from my favorite card store Hallmark. This year I made it easy on myself and created them all online from CardStore.com

They have TONS of Holiday Cards to choose from! TONS I tell you! Choose from Christmas Greeting Cards, Christmas Postcards, Funny Christmas Cards, Business Christmas Cards, News Years, Winter Holiday and even Invitations & Gift Tags! Or choose what I did ~ Photo Cards!

I had a lot of fun picking out the perfect card for us. There may have been too many! I was to the point where I said eeny meany miny mo because I could have stayed all night on this site. But lots of choices is a good thing right?

Once I choose the card I wanted it was easy to add my photo, edit the text, and preview my card. It all went very smoothly! A couple of features I loved ~ First, they asked me if I wanted my return address printed on the envelope. Of course I did! Second, did I want them to add stamps and have them mail my cards for me? Oh, I thought hard about this option, but choose against it this time because I didn't officially have my whole list together. Both of these options they do for FREE (well $.44 for the stamps you know).
The cards came in just a few days! But there was a printing glitch and the exact design wasn't printed on the cards. I called the 800 number and talked to a representative who apologized and got it straightened out. My new cards were here just a few days later with a discounted price so I'm not one to complain. This glitch won't stop me from ordering again. I really like this store. And I'm going to need some Thank You cards ~ What do you think?

Right now CardStore.com has a special on ~ Free Shipping & 15% off with code FREESHIP15 ~ What a deal!
Take your time, pick out what you want, and CardStore will mail them for you!
Have you bought your Holiday Cards yet?

CardStore.com gave me $25 to spend at their store for this review but I was not compensated in any way for the post and all opinions are my own.

Share and Win with Tom's of Maine

This post brought to you by Toms of Maine. All opinions are 100% mine.

I've been a Tom's of Maine fan for awhile now. I switched to a natural, aluminum-free deodorant many years ago because it was a safer, healthier choice. But I tried many different brands, not finding the perfect one. That is until I used their long-lasting care, Apricot stick. I love the smell. I love how long it lasts. Well, I love it.

Did you know that Tom's Of Maine has oral care too? And it's Wicked Fresh ~ as their slogan states!  Their Long-lasting Fresh Breath Toothpaste protects from cavities but at the same time uses natural flavored oils and patent-pending botanical extract to keep your breath smelling fresh. The Wicked Fresh Mouthwash comes in refreshing mint flavors to give your mouth that clean feel!

Right now That's Wicked Fresh contest page is having an easy and fun giveaway of a $500 Target Gift Card and other Wicked Fresh products too. You will need a Twitter account to follow @TomsofMaine and you'll get to tweet about your favorite Wicked Fresh moment in your life. Fun! I just did my entry and it took less than a minute. Wahoo! I could really use that Target card this holiday season.

If you're a facebook junkie like me then you'll love their active page HERE.

Thanks Mama Tots Bots AIO Cloth Diaper Giveaway

We have to end Cloth Christmas Week with a cloth diaper right? Well I have a good one for you from ThanksMama!

Those of you who are members of the Cloth Diapering Bloggers know that when you sign up they ask if you could create a perfect diaper what would it be? I answered a fast drying AIO with prints and remember thinking that there would probably never be such a thing. Wrong! I found it! Can you believe I found my "perfect" diaper?

Let me introduce you to Easy Fits that are made my Tots Bots and distributed by Bummis here in the U.S.

It looks a little bit different than the diapers we are used to. It has a tongue, as I call it. This tongue is made with polyester microfiber on the inside and an ultra soft rayan layer made of bamboo fibers (Oeko-tex certified!) on the outside which lays against baby's skin. Very very soft! And very absorbent! Here is what it looks like.

You can then fold it into as many layers as you want and tuck it into the pocket to look like this.

And there is plenty of room to add an insert if you want for night time use!

The velcro is the best I've seen. It is very thick and sturdy and "sticks" very well. I can't see it curling like some velcro tabs we know and it doesn't seem to get that lint inside it either. Not exactly sure what it's made of to make it different but it's strong! And great laundry tabs too!

One thing I want to show you. It's great how the velcro tabs can overlap for the little guys but make sure your tabs stay on to the strip. One of the first times we wore it, I didn't carefully lay it on there and when baby sits up the velcro rubs on to babies skin. Not comfy! So once I realized that I just paid attention to where I laid the tabs and that there was plenty of material between the velcro and baby's belly.

So here is my little guy wearing my dream diaper - A one-size AIO (all in one) with a cute print!
And the best part - fast drying!
Yes, he's playing Wii :)

Now where can you buy this fabulous diaper? At ThanksMama.com!
Thanks Mama is a wonderful website! They carry many different products!
Cloth Diapers of course, but also Toys, BabyWear items, Mama Cloth, & lots more Baby Items!

Shipping & Rewards are two things I always check out when buying online. At ThanksMama shipping is free when you purchase $60 or more. But even if you buy one diaper it is still fair. My cart told me it was only $2.75 to ship a Tots Bots diaper to me. Plus they have a points system to help you earn rewards off your future purchases. Nice!

Thanks Mama would like you to WIN an Easy Fit Tots Bots Diaper (8-35 lbs) or a Tiny Fit for the newborns (5-12 lbs).

A Babylegs Package Giveaway!

Oh we love our Babylegs. Our leg warmers have so many uses and are worn almost daily in our house!

In the summertime we wore them alone with just a onesie or t-shirt around the house. It was the perfect layer to give baby some covering with the air conditioner on, especially to bed at night because I didn’t want to put a blanket on him as a newer baby.

Now in the winter we use them under our loose cotton outfits for extra warmth. But even better is I love them for nights underneath his jammies. I like to keep the heat lower and am always worried about him being cold. Our Babylegs is the answer!

The third great use is for crawling! He doesn’t get those red splotches on his knees when he wears his ‘Legs!

And of course we love them just because they are darn cute!

Babylegs sent me a couple pairs of socks which I had never used before and I have to say I was really happy to get them. Socks is not something I had as hand-me-downs from the boys so I was anxious to try them. They are super cute too! And have the traction on the bottom which is a MUST for my 10 month old who pulls up onto everything now but doesn't have full balance. We love them and will be definitely be getting more!

I also had some tights sent to me but they were going to P'Diddy's little girl friend who is such a cutie patootie. "These tights fit Ruby so well. They are so soft and the argyle is just to cute! Even though she's on the smaller end of the size they weren't all bunchy around the ankles like some tights she's worn. And they held up fantastically in the wash, even after my husband put them in the dryer, opps! I'll definitely be getting more of these for my little one."

Don't you love her curls? Oh, and the tights are very nice too :)

Are you ready to WIN a BabyLegs Package?
How about 2 leg warmers, a pair of socks, and some tights!

Tina with My Baby's Green ~ Organic Romper Giveaway

We can't have Cloth Christmas without Organic Baby Clothes right? That is why Tina from My Baby's Green is happy to show off her store and give away an organic cotton romper to one lucky baby!

"My Baby's Green was started by Rich and Tina with the intent of providing very high quality products that are both environmental and baby friendly. We researched many vendors and manufacturers looking for companies that shared our goal of providing these types of products and services. On our website you will find only products that we feel are of the highest quality available, and do their part to help our planet. We set out with the intent to do this for our baby, your baby, and all of the generations of babies to come."

They have a wonderful assortment of organic baby and toddler clothes in a few different brands including their own!

This onesie is from the Oh Soy Collection and combines organic cotton and soybean fiber.
Soybeans you say? Read more about that HERE ~ it's really cool!

Here is P'Diddy in the Romper that you can win! It's 100% organic and sssuuupppeerrr soft!
There are these really neat decals that you can add on to your outfit too.
 Here is my favorite one.

Here is a  little bit of info about the MBG Brand
The clothing on our website that carries the My Baby’s Green brand, is 100% certified organic cotton. The products are Non-GMO, in other words not descendent from any genetically modified organisms, or from products derived from GMO products. All possible steps are taken to prevent the products being contaminated with any GMO or GMO derived products.

The dyeing processes are eco-friendly, with low-impact; AZO-free and heavy metal free dyeing. Printing is water based, which is sustainable

They also carry many of the eco-friendly items that we have been talking about lately...

Non-toxic Toys ~ I just got P'Diddy the Dancing Alligator for Christmas

Litter Free Lunch Ideas ~ these are going in everyone's stocking this year!

And even AIO Diapers! Wahoo!

Let's hear a little bit about Tina's crunchiness..."My family was not always eco-friendly or even organic.  It wasn't until some major life changes that occurred in my life that had me going organic as much as I could and being eco-friendly just naturally followed. The more I read, the more I learned about the toxic chemicals to which we unknowingly expose our children.  I support my local farmers and when it is time to purchase something new I try my best to either choose eco-friendly products, support local vendors, other small companies, or consignment shops and wherever possible I buy organic.  I don't buy bottled water anymore-instead I use BPA free or stainless steel bottles, if I don't make my cleaning supplies then I only purchase organic or toxic free, and for any type of shopping I take reusable bags that I now offer at MBG."

TeSeAr AlErT! ~ January 5th ~ Tina is doing another giveaway RIGHT HERE for this!

GreenTime Sandwich & Snack Bags Giveaway

I know it's Cloth Week, but today's giveaway could have been held in Plastics Week too. Let's pretend for a second it is so that I can continue to throw some facts your way!

~ Did you know that one TRILLION plastic bags are used worldwide each year?

~ A person uses 3-4 plastic bags in their lunch everyday which is about 1,000 a year.

~ Every year Americans throw away about 100 billion plastic bags which is equivalent to 12 million barrels of oil.

~ Only 1% of plastic bags are recycled because it's to costly

~ Nearly 100,000 marine and sea animals and 1 million birds die each year from eating or getting tangled in plastic.

I got all of those facts from Green Time! They not only make cloth bags, but they care about our environment and are happy to be doing their part in eliminating waste.

Cherri's Story ~ "One day about 3 years ago my 10 year old daughter and I started realizing how plastic affected the environment and how much we were using and throwing away, we decided that something needed to be done and we needed an alternative to plastic baggies.

I did love how convenient and how fresh plastic bags kept my food. I wanted to create a bag that was safe, reusable, convenient, easy to care for, could hold wet snacks and would keep the items fresh for over 24 hours so I could pack lunches the night before.

After much research and testing for a safe lining and a lining that performed the way I needed it to, I discovered nylon and peva fabric.

The Greentime reusable snack and sandwich bags were created.

We have be using ours for a long time, Since we love the products so much and use them all of the time, we wanted to share them with you. We feel great knowing that we are doing something to help the earth and the future. Whenever I sell something my daughter gets so excited! Not just because it lets her mom continue to work at home but because somebody else is helping the environment. She loves that! We both want to say thank you very much!"

There are a lot of Mamas that make sandwich/snack bags I've noticed lately, but do you know what attracted me to Green Time? Those of you who are getting to know me can figure it out.....they are CUTE! There are tons of fabrics to choose from! I love lots of choices!

So you will be surprised to hear what I picked out. It is sooo cool....Decorate Your Own Bags!

I bought a package of fabric markers for the kids to color them. I was way nervous because my children do not have the artistic hand (they unfortunately get this from their mother) but that didn't matter right? It was just for fun! This is what they did!

Another item that Cherri makes and sells is Cloth Napkins! I have been looking for CUTE and reasonably priced cloth napkins for my boys for awhile now. She sent me a set and we love them. They are soft and the perfect size to fit in the boys' lunches.

Do you want to hear if Cherri is a Crunchy Mama?
"Yes, I am a crunchy mama. I recycle, make my own cleaners, grow some of my own vegetables and I can them sometimes. I would eat all organic foods and meat, I would use all natural products but I don't because right now I can't afford them. I believe in all of the things that you mentioned, I really liked to see that other people believe in co sleeping. When my children were young, they would sleep with us and I didn't really let anyone know because when I did people would say that I really need to get them in their own beds and really made me feel terrible because I did. I didn't see anything wrong with it and it did not bother us so I just stopped telling people."

Would you like to WIN both a sandwich AND snack bag in the fabrics of your choice?
Cool huh?
